iPhone 4s got “zapped”, or over electricuted on a faulty docking-type stereo in a power surge. Computer doesn’t read it, nor does it charge or even turn on. However, when connected to charger, it makes a quiet ticking noise. I took the battery out, connected the charger, & it still makes the same ticking sound. Could the problem be, it just needs a new battery?
Pia Zamora, very, very unlikely. I suggest you take the phone apart, using these guides. Check for any obvious damage like burned or charred looking components. the yellow square marks the area you want to pay close attention to. you may have to remove the RF shields At minimum you will have to replace the dock connector. Hello, I realised this post is ancient but I am going through the same ordeal… I plugged an iphone 4s into a usb car charger and it went blank and unresponsive. The battery (which I replaced two years ago) doesn’t charge, there’s no response to any of the buttons and it’s not recognised when plugged into a computer. Oddly the battery was giving out 8.3v instead of 3.7v on a multimeter reading… although I am not very experience with multimeters and maybe I was doing something wrong. Before going ahead and replacing the docking port, is there a way to check if it’s really ‘fried’ using the multimeter. Does it have a fuse I can check? I realise this is an old phone but I wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet… :(
