Playback volume has gone wrong, level 1 is deafening
If you go from the DVD player into another piece of equipment, like a stereo tuner or an amplifier, make sure the volume on that second piece of equipment is volume low. Without knowing your setup, it sounds like you might be sending a low signal into something else that is turned all the way up. It’s easy to forget about the amp part of it.
