I’m trying to reinstall OSX as I have in the past, the DVD passes the check stage, multiple components install, but I get an error saying it could not finish, please try again. I have tried 4 times already. I can’t get into verbose mode or the utilities on the disk to check if the HD is bad. Any other ideas?
If you can’t get to disk utilities on your installation disk the optical drive has probably gone south. Do a install via Target mode if you have another Mac. The cost to replace the internal drive is almost prohibitive. Look at an external optical drive that can be moved to your next machine. I like the LaCie USB/Firewire drives. You can also try a little canned air in the old drive to see if it can be salvaged.
