Os 10 6 8 Installed And Working But Startup Disk Icon Not On Desktop Mac Mini Model A1176

I recently installed Mac OS 10.6.8 on an internal hard drive upgrade and an external hard drive as a backup. Both drives will start up, but the start up disk icon does not appear on the desktop. I can access either hard drive by opening an external drive which shows on the desktop. How can I get these icons to show on the desktop when I start up from them?

Go to the desktop > Finder > Preferences > Show Hard Disks
