I recently received a broken Macbook. I was informed that the Apple store said it needs a new logic board ($400-500). I was hoping to fix it for them for a little less. When you plug it in there is no light on the magsafe connector (tried two known good chargers). I tried unplugging the battery to do an SMC reset & also unplugging the IO board ribbon cable which was suggested online. There is no visible corrosion or water damage. Does anyone have any ideas or further troubleshooting steps I could take before I order a new logic board or right side I/O board. Also, is there a good way to isolate if it is a charging board issue or the logic board?
No MagSafe LED tells us the one wire comm line between the MagSafe charger to MagSafe connection and then onto the Logic board and the SMC logic has a problem. You need to trace out the pathway with a DVM checking it and the power lines to the MOSFET’s. and onward. Review this Apple T/N top make sure the basics are covered Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters, you may need a new DC-In board. and then that leaves the logic board as the last thing. If you want to troubleshoot this deeper you’ll need the schematics and board views for the logic board and have the skills to read them and a good understanding of micro-electronics, plus the tools and parts to fix the board. There is a point were is easier and cheaper just to replace the full logic board than dig into it. Which I would recommend if you are sure thats whats needed.
