Chosen Solution
Used bootable USB drive to start (Was running Mojave 10.14.6). Also had external drive with backup of old internal drive. Disk utility only recognized the external drives. Did the Command-Option-R boot and got the Internet Recovery system which ran for a while but no change.
Make sure new drive is securely seated into the drive port and secured with proper screw. When you boot from external and open Disk Utility, go into the upper left “view” button and click “show all devices”. See if your internal shows up then.
