Hi there, I have a Macbook Pro here with water damage. I am unsure of the specs except that it is A1278 9,2 It was dried with rice. At first it would switch on… boot as normal but my password would not be accepted, when i tried to recover password using the recover with apple ID option it would crash. I removed the HD. I am trying to do the hardware diagnostics with d/alt-d but no luck. I get a panic message. I tried inserting a usb with OSX 10 and still the same. I will work out now how to attach an Image and let you see the screen…

Can anyone diagnose the fault with the information given? I would be happy to replace components but dont know which one is at fault. Thanks! Edit, When left to its on devices it will flash a globe for a while then restart, repeating.

Hi First of all, using rice doesn’t really save electronics with water damage, unfortunately. With that said, you can try to disassemble the laptop and carefully clean up and dry out any area that seems to have some traces of water damage on it with isopropyl rubbing alcohol, being careful not to knock things off of the motherboard. Try to not keep things plugged in or powered, since that might cause further electrolytic damage in the presence of liquid. It is likely the keyboard will have to be replaced, and you can get either the bare thing or the whole top case on AliExpress for a modest price, but as always, test before replacing. Seems like the machine still has hope, given that you still can see stuff on the display.
