My Xbox One’s optical drive won’t spin despite the disc being able to freely spin. The original drive would load the disc, but the loading mechanism wouldn’t let go of the disc and the drive would produce a grinding noise. So I purchased a replacement drive, which came with everything except the controller board. This drive will load the disc, but it won’t spin the disc. However, I can spin the disc with my finger without resistance. Video

Here’s the way that this works:

  1. The laser starts up to “detect” that a disc is present.
  2. Assuming that the disc is there, the disc will try to spin while the system attempts to read the Table of Contents (TOC) off of the disc. Since you state that the disc won’t spin, I would suspect that the laser has not determined that the disc exists. You might have a defective drive. Dan
