A few days ago my power supply (EVGA 750 BQ 750 Watt 80 Plus Bronze) started making a sound that can best be described as a space ship accelerating. It happens every 5-10 seconds or so, and is relatively quiet. The odd thing is that the noise stops when under load. The sound is a faint rrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRR in an exponential trend line, then stops, then does the same sound again a few moments later. It has more than enough power for my setup, so I do not think that it is being over worked by the system. No performance problems or crashing, just annoying to listen to as I game and work. I took apart my system and blew everything out with compressed air, and I confirmed that the fan in the PSU is unobstructed and clean. Any suggestions on possible problems would be great, I am considering just replacing it at this point due to the annoyance of the sound. Thanks!
Dan Cheney could be coil whining or capacitor squeal (unlikely in your case but a bit hard to hear so I included the possibility) by the large caps. Do not touch unless they are properly discharged. I would start out by “securing” the coils in place. Use some non-conductive material like hot glue and coat the coils so as to stop the inductor coils from vibrating at all. Best material for long lasting results would be a neutral cure silicone rubber product. The reason why it changes under load is because it’s resonance you are dealing with and with changing things around (lower/higher voltage, or Mhz etc) the whine can actually stop for a certain time.
